FLEAS, FLEAS GO AWAY - PLEASE DON'T COME BACK ANOTHER DAY!
9:48 am edt
Spring and summer time are here. It’s time for beaches, picnics, amusement parks, dog parks, BBQs and hanging out
in the backyard. But this time also brings out pesky little insects – Fleas!
Fleas are small
leaping insects that feed on the blood of humans, dogs, cats and other animals. Fleas thrive in warm, wet weather when temperatures
are 60 degrees or warmer. Because homes are typically climate-controlled, fleas can easily breed. Fleas are annoying creatures
that can spread disease and cause tapeworms. The flea goes through four stages in their life cycle: eggs, larva, pupa, and
adult. An adult flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day, produce 1,000 eggs in a lifetime and live on a dog for more than 100 days.
So the ultimate goal is not to have fleas at all; but if that goal is out the window, then the next goal is
to stop fleas from becoming adults (which can spawn). Preventative measures include good housekeeping; meaning, regular vacuuming
and cleaning/washing pet bedding. The application of topical flea treatment to your pet may be done year round, not just in
the spring/summer months. To treat the outside area, use an insect growth regulator “IGR” (these are typically
safe for humans and pets, but read the product labels). Follow the IGR product instructions, but the typical mixture is 1oz
of IGR to 1 gallon of water. Spray the IGR mixture in the yard (especially in heavy vegetated areas) and inside anywhere the
pet frequents. Repeat this preventative and treatment process three (3) times a year starting the first week in April.
no matter how vigilant you are, there may be times that those pesky little insects make it onto your pet. Now what? It’s
important to remove them from your pet. There are two avenues – commercial products and homemade flea shampoo/dip. You
can make your own homemade flea shampoo/dip and you probably already have the simple ingredients on hand. Mix a half a cup
of vinegar and half a cup of Dawn liquid dish soap together and use as a shampoo (let sit on animal a bit) or fill a basin
with lukewarm water add the solution and let your pet soak. You can then comb on the fleas out.

AND THE ANSWER IS...

Which animal would stand on its hind legs
and 'box' to invite another animal to play?
AKC Meet the Breeds®
The well-conditioned middleweight athlete of
dogdom, the Boxer is a powerful dog with an intelligent and alert expression. While they are instinctive guardians, the Boxer
loves to be with his people. This personality has allowed them to succeed as couriers during war time and as seeing-eye dogs
for the blind. Appearing in both fawn and brindle colors, the Boxer currently ranks as one of the most popular dogs in the
United States according to AKC® Registration Statistics.
A Look Back
Developed in Germany in the 19th century, Boxers were
originally used for dog fighting and to run down and hold large game such as wild boar and bison until the hunter could arrive.
The breed is known for standing up on its hind legs and batting at its opponent, appearing to box with its front paws. Imported
to America after World War I, they began to grow in popularity in the late 1930's.
Right Breed for You?
of the breed's most notable characteristics is its desire for human affection, especially from children. They are patient
and spirited with children, but also protective, making them a popular choice for families. The Boxer requires little grooming,
but needs daily exercise.
If you are considering purchasing a Boxer puppy, learn more here.
- Working Group; AKC recognized in 1904.
- Ranging in size from 21 ½ inches to 25 inches tall
at the shoulder.
- Large game hunter, guard and companion dog.
