FLEAS, FLEAS GO AWAY - PLEASE DON'T COME BACK ANOTHER DAY!

Spring and summer time are here. It’s time for beaches, picnics, amusement parks, dog parks, BBQs and hanging out in the backyard. But this time also brings out pesky little insects – Fleas!

Fleas are small leaping insects that feed on the blood of humans, dogs, cats and other animals. Fleas thrive in warm, wet weather when temperatures are 60 degrees or warmer. Because homes are typically climate-controlled, fleas can easily breed. Fleas are annoying creatures that can spread disease and cause tapeworms. The flea goes through four stages in their life cycle: eggs, larva, pupa, and adult. An adult flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day, produce 1,000 eggs in a lifetime and live on a dog for more than 100 days.

So the ultimate goal is not to have fleas at all; but if that goal is out the window, then the next goal is to stop fleas from becoming adults (which can spawn). Preventative measures include good housekeeping; meaning, regular vacuuming and cleaning/washing pet bedding. The application of topical flea treatment to your pet may be done year round, not just in the spring/summer months. To treat the outside area, use an insect growth regulator “IGR” (these are typically safe for humans and pets, but read the product labels). Follow the IGR product instructions, but the typical mixture is 1oz of IGR to 1 gallon of water. Spray the IGR mixture in the yard (especially in heavy vegetated areas) and inside anywhere the pet frequents. Repeat this preventative and treatment process three (3) times a year starting the first week in April.

Unfortunately no matter how vigilant you are, there may be times that those pesky little insects make it onto your pet. Now what? It’s important to remove them from your pet. There are two avenues – commercial products and homemade flea shampoo/dip. You can make your own homemade flea shampoo/dip and you probably already have the simple ingredients on hand. Mix a half a cup of vinegar and half a cup of Dawn liquid dish soap together and use as a shampoo (let sit on animal a bit) or fill a basin with lukewarm water add the solution and let your pet soak. You can then comb on the fleas out.
